In the last 50 years Digital Technologies have kicked off huge and profitable industries, but this is not happening for Digital Media. To remove the hurdles, and let society and business reap the benefits of the Digital Media Revolution, we need a Digital Media Project 

  
Digital Technologies Digital Technologies have created huge and profitable industries, as shown by these three examples:
   
The winners, so far Information Technology After 50 years there is a huge and profitable industry engaged in hardware, software and services.
Integrated Circuits After 40 years there is a huge and profitable industry serving multiple industries. 
Digital Communication After 20 years there is a huge and profitable industry offering products that other companies eagerly seek.
   
Digital Media There was expectation that Digital Media would trigger a Digital Media Revolution with beneficial effects on society and business.
   

The potential winners with Digital Media

• Creators should have new ways to express themselves
• End users should attain new levels of satisfaction and
• Business players should find new opportunities aplenty.

   
Did they win? Ten years after Digital Media have first been deployed, the Digital Media Revolution is not happening.
   
The losers There are no examples of companies who are thriving because of Digital Media, certainly not to the extent other Digital Technology companies have.
Some end users may get benefits sometimes - but only if they flout the rules.
   
Need to act There are initiatives under way, such as the MPEG-21 Multimedia Framework project.These are providing major foundational standards, but technology is not sufficient to guarantee that the Digital Media Revolution will indeed happen and the expected benefits achieved.
   
A proposal We must apply concerted collective efforts to get out of this impasse and establish a Digital Media Project to help the Digital Media Revolution take hold.
   
In 4 steps 1st step A common basis of knowledge is established and shared interpretation tools developed. Riding the media bits is offered as a vehicle to achieve these two goals. 
2nd step A Digital Media Manifesto defining the scope of the Digital Media Project is collectively prepared. A draft is offered to kickstart the discussion.
3rd step The Digital Media Project is set up as agreed in the Digital Media Manifesto, and run under the aegis of a not-for-profit organisation.
4th step The Digital Media Project develops strategies whose execution will be recommended to appropriate entities. 
   
Method of work If you agree on the analysis and the need to take action, you are invited to send your comments and contribute to the drafting of the Digital Media Manifesto. Contributions will be used according to the communication policy.
   
Help is needed The Digital Media Project is an international effort. Help making the Digital Media Manifesto multilingual will be appreciated.
