Promises

e-mail

 Last update: 2003/07/14

People embark on a project - even though an implied one - and make all the investments because they see they will eventually get benefits from doing so. People did invest in Digital Media Technologies because of an implicit promise that there would be substantial advantages.

There has never been a formal list of promises, but it helps writing down what each player was implicitly promised:

Player
Promise
content providers

• create more content, more easily and with more features
• manage assets more easily and effectively
• offer more content better matched to end users' wishes

service providers

• use more delivery means
• reach more customers
• offer richer content selections
• cut delivery costs
• multiply opportunities of intermediation

telcos

• upgrade delivery infrastructures to support broadband

manufacturers

• develop and market all sort of devices for all players on the value chain

end users

• get any content - anytime - anywhere - on any device - in any form

public authorities

• achieve policy of effecting a quantum step in the well-being of citizens

Did each player get what he had been promised? Unfortunately, no. That is why there is so much disillusion around.
