Content description is the future of media in the 21^st century. This is not an overstatement. MPEG-7, the fourth major standard developed by the MPEG group, planned to achieve final status in July 2001, provides a comprehensive set of audio-visual descriptions and a flexible framework for describing the content of multimedia.

The first MPEG-7 Awareness Event provides an opportunity for MPEG-7 developers to highlight their work and share their experiences with other developers and organisations that have a common interest in Audio-Visual Content Description and Management.

It is expected that this first Awareness Event will be become one of a number of such events that will be held over the coming years and that will lead to the establishment of an MPEG-7 Industry Forum with similar goals as the successful MPEG-4 Industry Forum (www.m4if.org).

For the first event, a program of seminars and demos by MPEG-7 developers is planned.
