1. What is IM1, and which software implementations are known?

IM1 is synonymous with the AHG on Systems Reference Software Implementation. Its mandate is to develop, integrate and demonstrate Systems software with the help of the committed partners, that means in particular to support the creation of the MPEG-4 reference code and to provide for software and test streams for demonstrating MPEG-4 capabilities before it becomes an international standard.

2. Where can I find the Im1 Software ?

Your have several options :

  1. Browse through the contributions you may find in http://www.chips.ibm.com/.mpeg/.
  2. http://mpeg4.nist.gov/IM1/
  3. ftp://ftp.fzi.de/systems/IM1

These sites are protected with the usual MPEG login and password.

3. On what platform is Im1 runing ? Is there a Linux version ?

Although Im1 has been developped as much as possible to be platform independent, it is still mostly used on Windows platform. There are no Linux version of the reference code and the group would wellcome such porting within Im1.

4. How do I join Im1 ?

Im1 participation is open to MPEG members only. Joining Im1 is mainly joining the Im1 reflector and participating to the development of the the Im1 software. The participation includes :

  1. Giving feed-back on the Im1 software to fix bugs.
  2. Porting the Im1 software for new applications or new platforms.
  3. Optimizing the Im1 software.
  4. Extending the Im1 software to cover the specification under development in Systems.
  5. Producing Im1 based demonstration and test applications.

5. What is exactly in the Im1 software ?

The Im1 software contains an implementation of all the normative part of PEG-4 Systems. It also includes a complete integrated MPEG-4 player, a DMIF implementation for local files, and few authoring tools.
