The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is Working Group 11 (WG 11) "Coding of Moving Pictures and Audio" of Subcommittee 29 (SC 29) "Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information" of the Joint Technical Committee 1 (JTC 1) "Information Technology" of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
 

MPEG was established in January 1988 as an Experts Group of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 2/WG 8 "Coding of Picture and Audio Information" and became SC 29/WG 11 "Coding of Moving Pictures and Associated Audio for Digital Storage Media" in November 1989.
