Definition of terms

This is a first contribution toward the development of a DMP vocabulary for DMP specifications. Note that no claim is made about completeness and accuracy.

Authorised domain	The ensemble of devices, delivery systems and interfaces which are employed under the control of an end-user to use content within and possibly outside of a properly defined environment
Conditional access	A system where users can only be granted or not granted access to content/services
Content description	Additional information distinct from but directly related to content. It can be of an objective nature (e.g. indices, start/end time, creator, metadata extracted automatically from the content itself etc.) or of a subjective nature (e.g. rating according to some criteria, notes etc.)
Creator	The user who performs the first and may perform one or more of the other following functions creating content setting usage rules setting licensing terms
Digital Rights Management	A system of IT components and services along with corresponding law, policies and business models which strive to distribute and control IP and its rights (NIST)
Delivery provider	A user performing the function of delivering content between any two or more user
DRM Platform	A framework that enables management of user rights and protection of content under a variety of business models for content usage
DRM Solution	A specific implementation of a DRM Platform
DRM Technology	Any type of technology that can be used in the implementation of a DRM solution
End-user	The user who performs the last and may perform one or more of the other following functions service search transaction initiation service activation content consumption
Fixation	The embodiment of information in a form that can be perceived by a human, reproduced or communicated through a device.
(Device) Manufacturer	The user who performs the first and may perform one or more of the other following functions devices manufacturing device distribution device software renewal devices revocation
Service provider	The user who performs the first three and may perform one or more of the other following functions content aggregation content protection usage rules application content delivery transaction processing usage information collection and aggregation
Storage	The temporary or persistent holding of a piece of content using local or remote storage capacity
Time Shifting	Using content at a different time than it was intended to be used
